US Virgin Islands to Hit 30% Renewables With a Solar+Battery Project

he U.S. Virgin Islands, a picturesque archipelago known for its stunning beaches and turquoise waters, are now riding the wave of sustainable energy. Honeywell, a global technology leader, has announced a partnership with VIElectron, a CB Loranger Company, to bring a cutting-edge solar-plus-storage energy solution to the region.

This eco-friendly initiative is set to propel the U.S. Virgin Islands towards sourcing 30% of their energy needs from renewables. The project involves deploying battery energy storage solutions (BESS) across six solar parks strategically located across the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John.

A 124MWh lithium-ion BESS will feature a comprehensive battery management system tailored to smooth out the inherent fluctuations of solar energy. Advanced energy controls and safety measures will allow for precise forecasting and optimization of energy use, ultimately making clean power more accessible and affordable for the islanders. The integration of this system with a massive 140MWDC solar array will not only boost the islands' clean energy capacity but also set a benchmark for other regions to follow.

Governor Albert Bryan Jr. of the U.S Virgin Islands hailed this venture, praising its synergy with the islands' sustainable energy vision. "It propels us closer to our goal of achieving 30% renewable energy consumption in the U.S. Virgin Islands, fostering a cleaner and greener energy ecosystem," he stated.

US solar panel manufacturers play a crucial role in the domestic solar industry, contributing to job creation and technological innovation while enhancing energy independence.

Historically, the US Virgin Islands have leaned heavily on fossil fuels for power generation. Up to 2020, less than a tenth of their energy was derived from renewables. Honeywell project is set to transform this landscape, aiming to bring the islands' renewable energy consumption to nearly one-third.
